SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. --As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, it is an important time to pause and reflect on what to be thankful for. Over 10% of San Jose's residents live below the poverty line, and thousands of people will be homeless in our community this holiday season.

In honor of National Hunger and Homeless Awareness week, the Valley Homeless Healthcare Program (VHHP) will be holding a number of events to raise awareness about the daily lives and struggles of our homeless neighbors.

  • Tuesday, November 13 12-1pm at Senter and Story Road Lunch will be served to homeless individuals at a homeless encampment near Coyote Creek. In addition to serving lunch, volunteers from VHHP will also offer flu shots and hand out toiletries.
  • Wednesday, November 14 12-1pm at Santa Clara County Office 70 W. Hedding St. The work of homeless residents will be featured in an Art Show. Tours of the Mobile Medical Unit will also be conducted, and VHHP staff and volunteers will offer information about their services to the homeless.
  • Friday, November 16th 9am -1pm at St. Joseph's Cathedral, 80 S. Market Street A downtown Health Fair will be held for uninsured, low-income, homeless residents offering free flu shots, free haircuts, free glucose and cholesterol screening.
